WORKING WITH THE POEM
1. (i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
Ans:- Shel Silverstein (the poetess) is the speaker in the poem.
(ii) With your partner list out the happenings the speaker is worried about.
Ans:- The speaker is worried about,
1. What may happen if she becomes dumb?
2. What may happen if a swimming pool is closed?
3. What may happen If she gets beat up?
4. What may happen If there is poison in her cup?
5. What may happen If she starts crying?
6. What may happen If she gets sick and dies?
7. What may happen If she doesn’t grow taller?
7. What may happen if she starts getting smaller? Etc.
(iii) Why do you think she/he has these worries? Can you think of ways to get rid of such worries?
Ans:-A person starts thinking very deeply when he/she does not have any work to do. Empty brain thinks much about unnecessary happenings. We can get rid of such worries by involving ourselves in any reasonable work because our work makes us positive and creates will power to do something better than before.
2. Read the following line.
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
Can words crawl into your year? This is an image. The poet is trying to make an image of what she/he experiences. Now with your partner try and list out some more images from the poem.
Ans:- Yes, this happens. It is really an image which seems to be true. Whenever we think an image appeared in our brain and we experience the voice of talking to us. Sometimes when we think off natural disaster we are afraid of the consequences. It seems the calamity appeared at once and we all are in great trouble. We experience both fear and happiness.
3.In groups of four discuss some more 'what-ifs that you experience in your day to day life and list them out.
Ans:-(i) I fear that if I make a mistake while walking on the road.
(ii) I fear, if someone breaks into my house and steal everything which I arranged with a very hard labour.
(iii) I fear, if I don’t get more than 90% marks in Annual Exams.
(iv) If a magician makes me mad.
(v)I fear, if a man cheat me in the travelling.
(vi)I fear if a flood/tsunami comes along with an earthquake.
(vii)I fear if my teacher scolds me for not doing homework in time.
(viii)I fear if I don’t win the match.
And now write a poem of five or six lines with the 'what-ifs' that you have listed.
What may happen if I make a mistake while walking on the road?
What may happen if a thief breaks into my room?
What may happen if I don’t get 90% marks in Annual Exams?
What may happen if a magician makes me mad?
What may happen if a cheater deceives me in travelling?
What may happen if tsunami, earthquake and flood come very together?
What may happen if my teacher scold me for not doing homework in time?
What may happen if I don’t win the match?
