A. Complete the following sentences.
1. The old banyan tree "did not belong" to grandfather, but only to the boy, because Grandfather, at sixty-five, could no longer climb it.
2. The small grey squirrel became friendly when it found that the boy did not arm himself with a catapult or air-gun.
3. When the boy started to bring him pieces of cake and biscuit, the squirrel grew quite bold to take morsels from his hand.
4. In the spring, the banyan tree was full of small red figs, and birds of all kinds would come there.
5. The banyan tree served the boy as a crude platform to spend the afternoon by reading books and propping himself against the tree with a cushion from the living room.

Ans:- The other two spectators were a myna and a crow. Both of them sat on the cactus plant to watch the upshot of the fight. In the last moment of the fight, both myna and crow wanted to pick up the cobra for their meal. Cobra killed the crow and myna flew away. The mongoose dragged the dead cobra away into the bushes. 
3. Read the descriptions below of what the snake did and what the mongoose did. Arrange their actions
in the proper order.

(ii) With your partner list out the happenings the speaker is worried about.

Ans:-A person starts thinking very deeply when he/she does not have any work to do. Empty brain thinks much about unnecessary happenings. We can get rid of such worries by involving ourselves in any reasonable work because our work makes us positive and creates will power to do something better than before.
2. Read the following line.
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
Can words crawl into your year? This is an image. The poet is trying to make an image of what she/he experiences. Now with your partner try and list out some more images from the poem.
Ans:- Yes, this happens. It is really an image which seems to be true. Whenever we think an image appeared in our brain and we experience the voice of talking to us. Sometimes when we think off natural disaster we are afraid of the consequences. It seems the calamity appeared at once and we all are in great trouble. We experience both fear and happiness.
3.In groups of four discuss some more 'what-ifs that you experience in your day to day life and list them out.
Ans:-(i) I fear that if I make a mistake while walking on the road.
(ii) I fear, if someone breaks into my house and steal everything which I arranged with a very hard labour.

2. Answer the following questions.
(i) How do desert animals survive without water?
Ans:- Desert animals develop different ways to survive without water. They are adapted to the harsh conditions. Gerbils spend the hottest part of the day in cool underground burrows. Darkling beetles are experts at catching drops of moisture on their legs, then lifting them into the air until the drops trickle down into their mouths. Camels have long, shaggy winter coats to keep warm and tidier coats in the summer to keep cool. They get all the moisture from desert plants and can survive for up to ten months without drinking any water.
(ii) How do mongooses kill snakes?
Ans:- Mongooses are very swift and quick fighters. They save them very fast from the strike of snakes. They attack the snake till they are tired. In this situation, the snake does not save from the swift attack of mongooses. This is how the mongooses kill the snake.
(iii) How does the hump of the camels help them to survive when there is no water?
Ans:-The humps of the camel are like a storage container. They are full of fat. When the food for them is scarce the fat of the hump nourishes them. Slowly the hump shrinks, which means fat is automatically used up. They are completely adapted to desert life.

WRITING
Imagine you are journeying through a desert. Write a couple of paragraphs describing what you see and hear.
Ans:-Life in a desert is very difficult. A desert is a sandy region without vegetation and rainfall. When I visited the Thar I found so many unfamiliar animals and villages. People were not seen after 9,o clock anywhere. There was nothing but sand and sand dunes in the desert.
I found the hot winds caring sands from one place to another one. Camels were seen everywhere walking and caring for the goods along with the human beings. The very that day I understood that water is the most precious thing for life. A very few animals and birds are found there. I heard the howling of jackals and mongooses.

1. Your partner and you may now be able to answer these questions.
(i) Who is the speaker in the poem? Who are the people the speaker meets? What are they doing?
Ans:-A school-going child is the speaker in the poem. The people are hawkers, gardeners, and a watchman. The hawker is selling bangles, gardener is at his work of digging away at the garden and the watchman is watching the street throughout the night.
(ii)What wishes does the child in the poem make? Why does the child want to be a hawker, a gardener, and a watchman? Pick out the lines in the stanza, which tells us this.
Ans:-The school-going child is very innocent. He wants to enjoy the same freedom as a hawker, a gardener and a watchman enjoys. He feels he is not the owner of his will in his school. He is tempted to the work of a hawker, gardener and a watchman.
The child expresses his views through the following lines.
I wish I were a hawker, spending my day in the road.
I wish I were a gardener, digging away at the garden.
I wish I were a watchman, walking the street all night.
(iii) From the way the child envies the hawker, the gardener and the watchman, we can guess that there are many things the child has to do, or must not do. Make a list of the do's and don'ts that the child doesn't like. The first line is done for you?

Ans:-It was the time when Jumman was made the Head Panch. He was the hear the case of Algu Chaudhry. His verdict compelled Samjhu Sahu to give Algu’s money for his bullock. Now Algu Chaudhry was very happy that is why he said,”This is justice.
C. Answer the following questions.
1."Then the situation changed." What is being referred to?
Ans:-“Then the situation changed” referred to the difficult situation of aunt after the transfer of her property to Jumman Shaikh.The aunt was welcome until her property was not transferred to Jumman. Just after getting her property Jumman along with his wife ill-treated the old aunt.
2.When Jumman's aunt realised that she was not welcome in his house, what arrangement did she suggest?
Ans:-When Jumman’s aunt realised that she was not welcome in his house, she decided to stay separately. She wanted to take monthly allowance for her living. She was now not able to share the food prepared jointly. She wanted her meal to be prepared separately.
3.What was the villagers' reaction when the aunt explained her case to them?
Ans:-Some of the villagers showed sympathy where as some of them wanted to make fun of her. Some villagers wanted her to make up with Jumman.
4.Why was Jumman happy over Algu's nomination as head panch?
Ans:-Jumman was extremely happy because Algu Chaudhry was his fast friend. He thought that the verdict would be in his favour.
5."God lives in the heart of the panch." the aunt said. What did she mean?
Ans:-She means that the panch becomes the representative of the God when he sits in the chair of judge. He does only fair and just. He is free from the burden of likes or dislikes.
6.What was Algu's verdict as head panch? How did Jumman take it?
Ans:-Algu’s  verdict compelled Jumman either to pay a monthly allowance or to transfer her property in her name. Consequently Jumman got angry at his friend and decided to take a revenge.
7.Algu found himself in a tight spot. What was his problem?
Ans:-Algu had a bullock. He sold his bullock to Sahu. Algu was promised that he would get the price within in a month. But it so happened that Sahu used the animal so much that it died. Now Sahu did not want to pay the money or price for the bullock.
8.Why was Algu upset over Jumman's nomination as head panch?
Ans:-Algu was upset because Jumman had decided to take revenge. He was annoyed at the verdict made in his case by Algu.
9.What was Jumman's verdict as head panch? How did Algu take it?
Ans:-Jumman gave the verdict that Sahu had to pay the price of bullock because it was strong and hearty at the time of purchasing. It was fair and fine decision.Algu took it happily and said it was real victory of panch.
10.Which of the following sums up the story best?

Ans:-Our mind is really a treasure. If our thoughts are confined permanently in it, it turns into a prison. Only words can free our thoughts from this prison.
