Working with the poem.
1.Discuss these questions in small groups before you answer them.
(i) When is a grown-up likely to say this? Don’t talk with your mouth full.
Ans:-A grown-up is likely to say this when children are found eating and talking. Eating and talking at the very same time can cause a serious trouble in the throat of the children.
(ii) When are you likely to be told this? Say thank you.
Ans:-We are likely to be told this when we are served or gifted by someone.
(iii) When do you think the adult would say this? No one thinks you are funny.
Ans:-I think the adult would say this only when we make a comment on a particular topic which is unknown to us. Sometimes when I make an irrelevant complaint against someone, the adult would say the same.
2. The last two lines of the poem are not prohibitions or instructions. What is the adult now asking the child to do? Do you think the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable? Why?
Ans:-The adult is now asking the child to learn the manners and use them in his/her real life situation. I don't think that the poet is suggesting it to be unreasonable because it is the duty of the adults to facilitate the children to learn everything on their own to be able to behave in a very decent way.
3. Why do you think the grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem? Is it important that they teach children good manners, and how to behave in public?
Ans:-The grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem because they want the children to learn good manners to behave well in their real life situation. It is very important that they teach children good manners and how to behave in public.
4. If you had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow, what would you say? Make at least five such rules. Arrange the lines as in a poem.
Ans:-If I had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow I would say
(i) Love children more than anything in the world,
(ii) Facilitate the children to learn manners without fear,
(iii) Let them talk to their friends regarding their games and sports, allow them whenever they need to play,
(iv) Don't scold the children, make them understand everything affectionately,
(v) Try to maintain cheerful existence on the faces of the children.
