Ans:-The neighbors wanted the dog to lead them to a treasure of gold. They tried to please the dog for the purpose but the dog led them to a dead kitten. They got stinking dead kitten instead of gold. Consequently they got angry and killed the dog.

1.The old farmer is a kind person. What evidence of his kindness do you find in the first two paragraphs.
Ans:-The old farmer is a very kind person. He has no child. He loved his dog like his own baby. His kind nature helped him give comfort to the dog like to a baby. He fed it with tidbits of fish from his own chopsticks and all the boiled rice it wanted. The old person was so kind to everything that has life, that he often turned up a sod to give food to the birds. He took care of his dog very much.
2. What did the dog do to lead the farmer to the hidden gold?
Ans:-One day the dog came running to the old man. It was trying to indicate a place which the old man did not take care thinking that it was playing. But the dog kept on whining and running to and fro for sometimes. Now the old man followed the dog. The dog scratched the spot. The old man struck his hoe in the earth and found a lot of gold buried.
3. (i) How did the spirit of the dog help the farmer first?
Ans:-One night the spirit of the dog appeared in a dream of the farmer and said to cut the pine tree over his grave to make a mortar for a rice pastry and a mill for his bean sauce. The farmer did it and got a heap of gold coins during the process of dough ready for baking.
(ii)How did it help him next?
Ans:-The dog appeared in the farmer's dream again and urged him to take the ashes of the mill and sprinkle them on the withered trees to bloom them. The old man did the same when the daimio was passing along the road. The landlord knew the farmer and ordered presents of silk robes, sponge-cake, fans and other rewards to be given to him. Also the farmer was invited to his castle. That is how the dog's spirit helped him next.
4. Why did the daimio reward the farmer but punish his neighbor for the same act?
Ans:-The greedy neighbor also wanted the daimio to order presents and rewards for him. So he also sprinkled the ashes on the cherry tree when the daimio was passing along the road. It was so disgusting that the wind blew the fine dust in the noses and eyes of the daimio and his wife. It was sneezing and choking. The landlord got angry and punished him for the same act.
