1. Why did Abbu Khan's goats want to run away? What happened to them in the hills?
Ans:- Abbu Khan’s goat wanted to run away because they did not like confinement. They wanted to enjoy their freedom saying in the hills. But they became delicious prey of a wolf. All of them had been eaten up by the wolf.
2. Abbu Khan said, "No more goats in my house ever again". Then he changed his mind. Why?
Ans:- Abbu Khan said,” No more goats in my house ever again”. Then he changed his mind because he felt lonely without a goat. He was to pass his time which was very tough without his goat. The goat was the first and the foremost pleasure of his life.
3. Why did he buy a young goat?
Ans:- He bought a young goat thinking that it would never desert him. He would start his pleasing life once again with his new goat.

1. Why did Chandni hate the rope around her neck?
Ans:- Chandni wanted to get pleasure from hills. She was not afraid of wolf-like other goats did. The rope around her neck did not allow her to go ahead towards the beautiful hills. She was bereft of taking pleasure from the hills due to the rope around her neck. So Chandni hated the rope.
2. "Now Abbu Khan understood Chandni's problem..." What was Chandni’s problem?
Ans:- Chandni did not like spending her life imprisoned. She also wanted the freedom to enjoy hills. She was not afraid of wild wolves. She wanted to be free even at the risk of her life. She expressed her view by saying that she would die if she was not freed. Now Abbu understood her problems.
3. Abbu Khan pushed Chandni into a small hut. This shows that he
(i) was cruel.
(ii) loved her and wanted to save her life.
(iii) was selfish.

Ans:- Chandni refused to join the group of wild goats because she wanted her freedom to be enjoyed by herself and on her own. She did not want any goat to share her enjoyment in the hills.

(iii) had to retain her freedom at all costs.

Ans:- The wise old bird said that Chandni was the winner because the old bird saw her fighting for her freedom at any cost. She had decided to keep hold of her freedom and fought bravely.
2. "Death in an open field is better than life in a small hut," Chandni said herself. Was it the right decision? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans:- “Death in an open field is better than life in a small hut, “Chandni said herself. It was the right decision because freedom is more precious than one’s enslaved desire. So if death is caused by fighting or striving for freedom must be better than life in a small hut.
3. Freedom is life. Discuss this with reference to 'Chandni' and 'I Want Something in a Cage'.
Ans:- It is a fact that freedom is life. There is no life without freedom. Chandni the goat did not want to stay in captivity because there was no freedom to enjoy the natural beauty of the hills. So she was spending her life without having any desire which could please her. The Chapter “I Want Something in a Cage” refers to the birds which were freed by the customer only after a few minutes of being purchased. The man who purchased the doves was a prisoner, released from prison after 10 years. He knew very well the difficulties of being a prisoner. So he does not want any bird to be caged or kept in any kind of captivity. If life is caged, it is death because freedom is the only life.
