1. Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring it up?
Ans:- The lady got the bear cub in the very near forest. She along with her old cook brought up the bear on the bottle.
2. The bear grew up but "he was a most amiable bear". Give three examples to prove this.
Ans:- The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. It is proved by the bear itself. The bear did not disturb any animal even on being grown up. The cattle grazing in the field were not frightened by the bear. He used to see animals and human beings very amiably. The dogs were habituated to play with the bear almost all sorts of games without any harm. Mountain ponies also accepted his presence.
3. What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?
Ans:- The bear was given bread, porridge, cabbage, turnip, potato and the very same was the provision for the dogs. There were two things he was not allowed to do. The first is that he was not to pick at apples and the second one, he was not to damage beehives.
4. When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?
Ans:- The bear was tied up with the chain only when the lady paid a quick visit to her sister for lunch. It was only on Sundays at night.
5. What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister's house? What did the lady do? What was the bear's reaction?
Ans:- One Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house a cracking sound was heard. She discovered that the bear intended to follow her. When she found the bear following her, she used her umbrella to hit him and hit him severely. Then and there the bear returned back to its real place.
6. Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?
Ans:- The bear was looking sorry for himself in the evening because he had made the mistake of following his mistress in the forest. Also, he was punished for that. The cook wanted the bear to be free because he had been parked himself gently all day. The cook thought that it was the moral duty of the lady that she would treat the bear affectionately instead of scolding cruelly.
Discuss the following topics in groups.
1. Most people keep dogs and cats as pets. Can you think of some unusual pets that people keep?
Ans:-Most people keep dogs and cats as pets because they are really domesticated as ones. But some people keep dangerous animals as their pets like tigers and snakes. These animals can make great harm sometimes which suits them. Some unusual pets are tigers, snakes, wolves, and bears.
2. The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?
Ans:- The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. I agree with the fact because the second bear saw the lady hitting on his nose with her umbrella so he thought the lady was more powerful than the bear.
