Working with the text.
Discuss the following questions in class. Then write your answers.
1.When he felt the earthquake,do you think Ignesious immediately worried about a tsunami? Give reasons for your answer. Which sentence in the text tells you that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck?
Ans:-When he felt earthquake Ignesious was not worried about a tsunami. He wanted to save his TV from the tremors that's why he kept it on the ground. The sentence "In the chaos and confusion, two of his children caught hold of the hands of their mother's father and mother's brother and rushed in the opposite direction" in the text tells me that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck.
2. Which word in the list below describe Sanjeev, in your opinion? (look up the dictionary for words that you are not sure of).
cheerful, ambitious, brash, brave, careless
heroic, selfless, heartless, humorous.
Use words from the list to complete the three sentences below.
(i) I don't know if Sanjeev was cheerful, ambitious or brash.
(ii) I think that he was very brave, heroic and selfless.
(iii) Sanjeev was not heartless, careless or humorous.
3. How are Meghna and Almas’ stories similar?
Ans:-Meghna and Alma's stories are similar because both are survivors. Both were swept away by the giant waves of tsunami. Meghna spent two days floating in the sea holding on to a wooden door. The relief helicopter flying over head did not find her. Ultimately she was brought to the shore by waves and found walking there. Almas when saw a log of wood floating she climbed on to it and fainted. When she woke up she found herself in a hospital.
4. What are the different ways in which Tilly’s parents could have reacted to her behavior? What would you have done if you were in their place?
Ans:-It is true that parents want to have control over the behavior of their children. Tilly's parents could also have tried to control her behaviour. They could have advised her not to behave like that. The tremors would go after sometimes. If I were in their place I would have studied the reasons of the strange behavior of Tilly. I would have asked her what she wanted to convey or what would happen if we would not be careful of the waves.
5. Tilly’s award was to be shared, who do you think she should share it with – her parents or her geography teacher?
Ans:-If Tilly's award was to be shared, she must share with her geography teacher. Her geography teacher taught her about tsunami and how to deal with it.
6. What are the two different ideas about why so few animals were killed in the tsunami? Which idea do you find more believable?
Ans:-The first idea says that animals have a sixth sense. The second says about their acute hearing abilities. I believe the first one because animals spend their life normally with the close contact of the earth’s surface. So it is possible that they can sense very soon about the natural disaster which are almost impossible for the human beings.
