Answer the followings questions.
1. What are some of the signs of approaching winter referred to in the text?
Ans: -Some of the signs of approaching winter referred to in the text are as follows.
(i)Birds began to fly southward in search of warm weather.
(ii)People initiated finding their woolen clothes.
(iii)Trees started falling off their dead leaves.
2. Write 'True' or 'False' against each of the following.
(i) Soapy did not want to go to prison. False
(ii) Soapy had been to prison several times. False
(iii) It was not possible for Soapy to survive in the city through the winter. True
(iv) Soapy hated to answer questions of a personal nature. True
3. What was Soapy's first plan? Why did it not work?
Ans:- His first plan was to attend a restaurant for taking meal. He was to take his meal and after that, he was to say to the staff of the restaurant that he had no money. Consequently, the staff would call the cop and he would be arrested very soon. In that way, he would be imprisoned to save his life from the winter’s cold. The waiter of the restaurant saw his torn shoes which compelled him to leave the place then and there. So his first plan did not work at all.
4. "But the cop's mind would not consider Soapy". What did the cop not consider, and why?
Ans:- It is a normal tendency of criminals that they run from the spot where they commit any crime. But the case of Soapy was quite different from the activities of the criminals. He did not run having seen the cop. So they did not believe him to be a criminal.
5. "We have orders to let them shout". What is the policeman referring to?
Ans:- The policeman is referring to the boy who is shouting to be arrested. He wants to convey that the boy is not at all criminal. He is shouting for some other purposes which are not associated with any criminal activities.
6. Write 'True' or 'False' against each of the following.
(i) Soapy stole a man's umbrella. False
(ii) The owner of the umbrella offered to give it to Soapy. False
(iii) The man had stolen the umbrella that was now Soapy's. False
(iv) Soapy threw away the umbrella. True
7. "There was a sudden and wonderful change in his soul". What brought about the change in Soapy?
Ans:- There was a sudden and wonderful change in his soul. When he saw the home where he spend the glorious and great life of his childhood, he recollected old memories of sweet songs and the love of his mother, he suddenly changed himself and thought to be a gentleman. He thought to get a job instead of trying to go to jail.
Discuss the following topics in groups.
1. Suppose no cop came at the end. What would Soapy's life be like through the winter?
Ans:- Suppose no cop came at the end Soapy would try to get a job so that he could start a new life being a gentleman. He had decided to get a job, so it was clear that he was ready to face any danger of cold or winter, but he was not in favor of prison.
2. Retell an episode in the story which is a good example of irony in a situation.
Ans:- Soapy wanted to be arrested so that he could spend his winter safely in prison. But all his attempts failed properly. When he decided to stay like a gentleman he was arrested then and there. I think this is the finest example of irony in the story.
