a diary? Given below under ‘A’ are some terms we used to describe a written
record of personal experience. Can you match them with their descriptions under
‘B’? (You may look up the terms in a dictionary if you wish)
Ans: (i) Journal:-
A written record of events with times and dates, usually official.
(ii) Diary:-
A book with a separate space for each day, in which you write down your
thoughts and feelings or what has happened on that day.
(iii) log:-
A full record of a journey, a period of time, or an event, written every day.
(iv) Memoirs:-
A record of a person’s own life and experiences (usually, a famous person)
2. Here are
some entries from personal records. Use the definitions above to decide which

with her sister was sent to Aachen to stay with her grandmother. Anne started right away in her studies staying with her grandmother. But in 1942 she

was shocked by the death of her grandmother. These events tell me that Anne
loved her grandmother.

Ans: Mr. Keesing was annoyed with Anne because she used to
talk too much in the class. She was warned several times, but she did not rectify

Ans: She proved that she had got her traits inherited from
her mother. Also, she stated that talking was a student’s trait that can’t be

students to learn in a very practical way.
4. What made Mr. Keesing allow Anne
to talk in the class?
Ans: A joke about a mother duck and the baby ducklings made

Ans: What is written by Anne in her diary can be written in
journals or memoirs also. She has mixed up her diary with memoir and journal.
Her diary was originally written in Dutch. Anne’s diary is different because he
has written so many things concerned with memoir and journal. In this way, her diary
is different from other diaries.
3. Why does Anne need to give a
brief sketch of her family? Does she treat ‘Kitty’ as an insider or an
outsider?
Ans: Anne believes
that no one would take any interest in her thoughts. She wanted the people to
know about her family which was only possible if she could write. So she decided
to give a brief sketch of her family.

4. How does Anne feel about her
father, her grandmother, Mrs. Kuperus and Mr. Keesing? What do these tell you
about her?
Ans: She was affectionate with all her family members. She said
that she had an adorable father. As she stayed with her grandmother in the
absence of her parents she loved her very much. She used to comply with all the
orders of her teachers. She was very sad during the farewell of Mrs. Kuperus. These
tell us that she was very affectionate to the teachers and her
family as well.
5. What does Anne write in her
first essay?
Ans: She wrote in her first essay about how talking is important
for students. She stated that talking is a trait of students. She sketches
the character of her mother by saying that she also talks so much. Anne wrote that she has inherited the traits
from her mother. At last, she wrote, much more was not possible to be done about
inherited traits.
6. Anne says teachers are more
unpredictable. Is Mr. Keesing unpredictable? How?
Ans: Yes! Teachers are more predictable. It is because Anne
was assigned her homework as a
punishment. But one day, after writing
her essay Mr.Keesing treated her just opposite of what she thought about.
Instead of giving another homework, he allowed her to talk in the class. This is
the reason why she says that teachers are more unpredictable.
