From the Diary of Anne Frank: ncert solution- (Class 10)

Activity:
1. Do you keep a diary? Given below under ‘A’ are some terms we used to describe a written record of personal experience. Can you match them with their descriptions under ‘B’? (You may look up the terms in a dictionary if you wish)
Ans: (i) Journal:- A written record of events with times and dates, usually official.
(ii) Diary:- A book with a separate space for each day, in which you write down your thoughts and feelings or what has happened on that day.
(iii) log:- A full record of a journey, a period of time, or an event, written every day.
(iv) Memoirs:- A record of a person’s own life and experiences (usually, a famous person)
2. Here are some entries from personal records. Use the definitions above to decide which of the entries might be from a diary a journal, a log, or a memoir.
(i) I woke up very late today and promptly got a scolding from Mum! I can’t help it – how can I miss FIFA World Cup matches.
Ans:  Diary.
(ii)10.30 a.m. Went to the office of the Director
01.30 p.m. Had lunch with the chairman
05.45 p.m. Received Rahul at the airport
09.30 p.m. Dinner at home.

(iii) The ride to Ooty was uneventful. We rested for a while every 50 km or so and used the time to capture the magnificent landscape with my handicap. From Ooty, we went to Bangalore.
What a contrast! The noise and pollution of this once beautiful city really broke my heart.

(iv) this is how Rajkapoor found me - -all wet and ragged outside R.K. Studios. He was then looking for just someone like this for a small role in Mera Naam Joker, and he cast me on the spot. The rest, as they say, is history!

1. What makes writing in a diary a strange experience for Anne Frank?
Ans: Anne Frank is a thirteen-year-old school girl. She does not have any experience of expressing her views by writing in a diary. She thinks no one will be interested in the musings made by her. These are the reasons which make writing in a diary a strange experience for Anne Frank.
2. Why does Anne want to keep a diary?
Ans: Anne wants to keep a diary to express her feelings about day-to-day happenings. Her friends were not able to be confided in. Her diary was the most important friend for her. This is why Anne wants to keep a diary.
3. Why did Anne think she could confide more in her diary than in people?
Ans: Anne Frank believed her diary to be more patient than people. This is the reason why she thought she could confide more in her diary than people.

1. Why does Anne provide a brief sketch of her life?
Ans: Anne provides a brief sketch of her life because she wants people to the sensitive facts about her life. She thinks people won’t believe her musings unless she writes about her unbearable situations in her diary.
2. What tells you that Anne loved her grandmother?
Ans: Anne Frank's parents emigrated to Holland. She along with her sister was sent to Aachen to stay with her grandmother. Anne started right away in her studies staying with her grandmother. But in 1942 she witnessed the death of her grandmother who was her most important caretaker. She was shocked by the death of her grandmother. These events tell me that Anne loved her grandmother.

1. Why was Keesing annoyed with Anne? What did he ask her to do?
Ans: Mr. Keesing was annoyed with Anne because she used to talk too much in the class. She was warned several times, but she did not rectify herself. At last, he asked her to write an essay on ‘Chatter Box’.
2. How did Anne justify her being a chatterbox in her essay?
Ans: She proved that she had got her traits inherited from her mother. Also, she stated that talking was a student’s trait that can’t be modified or changed. This is how she justified her being a chatterbox in her essay.
3. Do you think Mr. Keesing was a strict teacher?
Ans: I don’t think Mr. Keesing was a strict teacher. It is because he did not take any serious action against Anne Frank for her talking too much n the class. Instead, he assigned her to write an essay on a ‘Chatter Box’. So this comfortable behavior of Mr. Keesing proves that he wants his students to learn in a very practical way.
4. What made Mr. Keesing allow Anne to talk in the class?
Ans: A joke about a mother duck and the baby ducklings made Mr. Keesing allow Anne to take in the class. It is because the joke played on Mr. Keesing by Anne was taken positively by him.

1. Was Anne right when she said that the world would not be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old girl?
Ans: Anne was absolutely right when she said that the world would not be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old girl. It is because people are normally found to be taking interest in the thoughts and matters of famous persons or the persons who are in any way powerful in society.
2. There are some examples of diary or journal entries in the ‘Before You read’ section. Compare these with what Anne writes in her diary. What language was the diary originally written in? In what way is Anne’s diary different?
Ans: What is written by Anne in her diary can be written in journals or memoirs also. She has mixed up her diary with memoir and journal. Her diary was originally written in Dutch. Anne’s diary is different because he has written so many things concerned with memoir and journal. In this way, her diary is different from other diaries.
3. Why does Anne need to give a brief sketch of her family? Does she treat ‘Kitty’ as an insider or an outsider?
Ans:  Anne believes that no one would take any interest in her thoughts. She wanted the people to know about her family which was only possible if she could write. So she decided to give a brief sketch of her family. She treats ‘Kitty’ as an insider.
4. How does Anne feel about her father, her grandmother, Mrs. Kuperus and Mr. Keesing? What do these tell you about her?
Ans: She was affectionate with all her family members. She said that she had an adorable father. As she stayed with her grandmother in the absence of her parents she loved her very much. She used to comply with all the orders of her teachers. She was very sad during the farewell of Mrs. Kuperus. These tell us that she was very affectionate to the teachers and her family as well.
5. What does Anne write in her first essay?
Ans: She wrote in her first essay about how talking is important for students. She stated that talking is a trait of students. She sketches the character of her mother by saying that she also talks so much.  Anne wrote that she has inherited the traits from her mother. At last, she wrote, much more was not possible to be done about inherited traits.
6. Anne says teachers are more unpredictable. Is Mr. Keesing unpredictable? How?
Ans: Yes! Teachers are more predictable. It is because Anne was assigned her homework as a punishment. But one day,  after writing her essay Mr.Keesing treated her just opposite of what she thought about. Instead of giving another homework, he allowed her to talk in the class. This is the reason why she says that teachers are more unpredictable.
